Get your Bake on!

Riddle me this...

There's nothing like homemade! You decide to bake a delicious dessert with only the best of ingredients. Mmmmm, honey sweetened apple pie!

On the prep counter, you have TWO measuring cups -- one is full of water (density of 1 g/mL) and the other full of honey (density of about 1.5 g/mL). In your haste, you accidentally drop a whole apple into the measuring cup of water. Oops! But you notice something....
The water level in the measuring cup went up 300 mL. The apple floated there exactly half submerged.
That must mean the apple has a volume of ____________.
And since you know that the weight of the liquid displaced equals the Buoyant Force on the object (thank you, Archmidedes!), the floating apple has a weight of _________.

You now carefully pull the apple out of the water and in the process of drying it off it slips out of fingers again and goes SPLAT right into the measuring cup of honey. Ugh! Being ever inquisitive, you notice that the level of the honey didn't rise as much as the water, and the apple seems to be floating higher -- only about 1/3 of it is submerged.
With only 200mL of the honey displaced, the weight of the honey displaced is _________________.

Soooooo, the weight of the honey displaced was MORE/LESS/SAME as the weight of the water displaced, because.... ______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________.

*****YOUR RESPONSE HAS TO ANSWER ALL FIVE QUESTIONS...
1. Apple's volume?   2. Apple's weight?   3. Displaced honey's weight?    4. More/Less/Same   5. Why is it more/less/same?   And don't forget UNITS.

    2. Apples Weight = 300 grams
    3. Displaced Honey's Weight = 300 grams
    4. Same
    5. The apple has the same weight and volume in each example. The honey and water have different densities, which means that there is more grams per mL in honey than in water. Therefore, the apple will displace the same amount of weight, but different volumes of each fluid.

    4. its the same
5.because honeys density its 1.5 g/mL and water is 1 g/mL so when the exact same apple is dropped in each, it will displace the same amout of weight, but more water because it is less dense.

    4. The weight of the honey displaced was the same as the water's displaced weight.
    5. The honey's density is 0.5 mL more that the water. Since the same apple was dropped into each cup, the apple will displace the same amount of mL even though the honey is more dense.

  4. Volume of the Apple: 600ml
    Apple's Weight: 300 grams
Weight of the Displaced Honey: 300 grams
Weight of the Honey Displaced: the same
Why?: The apple has the sam density and weight and stays the same in each instance here. On the other hand, the water and the honey have a different densities. The honey's density is of 1.5ml whereas the water's density is 1ml. Once the apple gets dropped it was displace the same weight in each but different volumes depending on the liquid's density.

  5. Apple Volume: 600mL
    Apple Weight: 300g
    Honey Weight: 300g
    SAME
The only reason the water rises higher than the honey is because the honey has a greater density of 1.5mL versus the water's 1mL. The apple moves the honey less because the honey's density counteracts more weight.

  6. I. Apple's Volume= 600mL
    II. Apple's Weight= 300g
    III. Displaced honey's weight= 300g
    IV. Same
    V. The weight of the honey displaced was SAME as the weight of the water displaced because of the different densities of the water and honey. Honey is more dense than water because there is more mass ("stuff") inside the given space ("volume"), therefore it rises lower than the water because there is more "stuff" supporting the apple and resisting gravity (buoyancy). Density means how much mass ("stuff") in a given space ("volume").

    2. 300 grams
    3. 300 grams.
    4. The same
    5. The displaced honey and water displaced weigh the same because although there is more water displaced than honey, the honey is more dense, which means there is more "stuff" in a given amount of space. Because the honey is 1.5 times denser than the water, it will weigh 150% more than the water. Therefore, the displaced honey at 200 mL will equal 300 grams (1.5 x 200) and the displaced water at 300 mL will also equal 300 grams (1 X 300).

    5. Water is less dense than the honey, however the apple displaces the same amount of weight of the each liquid because less honey will be displaced but the honey weighs more, more water will be displaced but it weighs less so their weights will be equal.

    5. The weight of the honey displaced is the same as the weight of the water displaced because even though they have different densities (honey's density: 1.5 g/mL and water's density: 1 g/mL) the honey weighs more but displaces less, while the water weighs less but displaces more; therefore, their weights are the same.

    5. While the weight of the displaced honey and water are equal, the honey is 1.5x more dense. This means there is more mass inside a given volume. It rises lower than the water because there is more buoyancy (resistance to gravity) supporting the apple. The displaced honey will equal 300g at 200 mL and the displaced water will equal 300g at 300g, exactly the same weight.

Even though the water is much less dense and is displaced more than the honey is, the honey is denser than water, so less is displaced, however the same amount of weight is displaced.Since the same weights of liquids were displaced, but there are differing densities, the amount of liquid displaced was different.
